The 25 Biggest Companies in Africa and Their Industries

RENO, Nevada, United States (IDN) – Business is booming across Africa and a number of companies have risen above the fray with 24 of them being worth over $1 billion. However, many of these companies are not famous outside of the continent, so what are the 25 biggest companies in Africa? They are:

  1. Naspers, South Africa ($60 billion – broadcasting)
  2. Steinhoff International, South Africa ($22.8 billion – retail)
  3. Sasol, South Africa ($20.9 billion – industrial chemicals)
  4. MTN, South Africa ($18.9 billion – telecommunications)
  5. FirstRand, South Africa ($18.5 billion – financial services)
  6. Vodacom, South Africa ($14.6 billion – telecommunications)
  7. Standard Bank, South Africa ($14.4 billion – financial services)
  8. Dangote Cement, Nigeria ($13.8 billion – cement)
  9. Sanlam, South Africa ($10.5 billion – insurance)
  10. Aspen Pharmacare, South Africa ($10.1 billion – pharmaceuticals)
  11. Remgro, South Africa ($9.3 billion – investment portfolio)
  12. Bidvest, South Africa ($8.4 billion – investment portfolio)
  13. Attijariwafa Bank, Morocco ($7.2 billion – financial services)
  14. Shoprite Holdings, South Africa ($6.7 billion – retail)
  15. RMB, South Africa ($5.8 billion – financial services)
  16. Commercial International Bank, Egypt ($5.5 billion – financial services)
  17. AngloGold Ashanti, South Africa ($5.4 billion – gold mining)
  18. Banque Centrale Populaire, Morocco ($4.1 billion – financial services)
  19. BMCE Bank, Morocco ($3.8 billion – financial Services)
  20. Imperial Holdings, South Africa ($3.7 billion – investment portfolio)
  21. MMI Holdings, South Africa ($2.6 billion – insurance)
  22. Guaranty Trust Bank, Nigeria ($2.2 billion – financial services)
  23. Massmart Holdings, South Africa ($2.2 billion – retail)
  24. Zenith Bank, Nigeria ($1.9 billion – financial services)
  25. FBN Holdings, Nigeria ($0.6 billion – financial services)

These companies represent a small range of countries with the vast majority being from South Africa (17) and with Nigeria (4) and Morocco (3) also doing well. The only other country represented is Egypt. They range in industries, but are dominated by financial services such as banking and insurance.
