FAO Stresses Importance of Investment in Rural Livelihoods

ROME (IDN) – A senior UN official has stressed close links between conflict, imperilled rural livelihoods and migration, pointing out that “rural development and food security are central to the global response to the refugee crisis”.

FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva said in a web posted statement on September 24: “The millions of people who are being forced to flee from war, poverty and other hardships are a tragic reminder of the urgent need for peaceful solutions based on social justice and improved economic opportunities for all. Key to achieving this is the protection of and investment in rural livelihoods.”

HAIFA (IDN*) – Israel trägt mit unterschiedlichen Initiativen zur Förderung der globalen Bürgerschaft bei. So hilft das Land ausländischen Studierenden aus dem Süden bei der Entwicklung von Lösungskonzepten für ihre Heimatstaaten. Als nützlich erweisen sich dabei die vielen Erfahrungen, die Israel mit seinen Hilfs- und Nothilfemaßnahmen in armen Ländern machen konnte.

Bereits Israels Gründungsvater David Ben Gurion hatte die Vision, mit der Weitergabe von Wissen und Ressourcen weltweit Gutes zu tun. Und die einstige Ministerpräsidentin Golda Meir erklärte später, dass kein anderes israelisches Projekt sie so sehr mit Stolz erfüllt habe wie “unser internationales Kooperationsprogramm”.

QUITO, ECUADOR (IDN) – Ein Zusammenschluss einflussreicher internationaler Organisationen hat einen Appell für eine überzeugende, koordinierte Kommunikation zur Unterstützung von Klimaschutzmaßnahmen gestartet. Das Manifest der ‘Climate Knowledge Brokers’ Group’, das Grundsätze für die Verbreitung von Informationen zum Klimawandel aufführt, will einen gesellschaftlichen Wandel im Umgang mit der Klimakrise in Gang setzen.

Die Initiative wird unter anderem durch das von den Vereinten Nationen geförderte Programm für erneuerbare Energien und Energieeffizienz (REEEP), das Zentrum und Netzwerk für Klimatechnologie (CTCN), das Übersee-Entwicklungsinstitut, das Netzwerk für Klima- und Entwicklungswissen (CDKN) sowie durch Dutzende weitere Organisationen mitgetragen.
