PARIS (IDN) – As thousands of Parisians headed to work on a recent Monday morning, an underground train in the Eiffel Tower area clanked to a halt, with the driver announcing an accident involving a member of the public on the tracks. Commuters had to quit the vehicle, scrambling to find alternative means of getting to their destinations.
The irritation and confusion were palpable, as streams of people exited the station. But for those who could cycle, Paris provides a public bike-sharing system, and dozens rushed to the bicycle stands, even as others headed to nearby bus stops or made the decision to walk.
Faith Leaders Play Crucial Role in Disaster Risk Reduction

GENEVA (IDN) – Representatives of faith-based organizations (FBOs), United Nations agencies, NGOs and academic institutions have stressed the need for engaging with local faith communities to reduce vulnerability to disaster risk, listening to and taking into account the voices especially of women who are often worst affected.
A round-table ahead of the International Day of Disaster Reduction observed on October 13 also pleaded for supporting local faith communities with local disaster risk reduction (DRR) activities, and maximizing the contribution of FBOs, by ‘using’ their spiritual capital.
NEWSBRIEF: Germany Supports Green Projects in India
BERLIN (IDN) – Leading German companies have expressed interest in backing three environmental undertakings of top priority to the Government of India. These relate to rejuvenating the legendary Ganges river and supporting a national campaign to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country.
Known as the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), the campaign covers 4,041 statutory cities and towns.
A third priority campaign, called Smart Cities Mission, relates to an urban renewal and retrofitting program of the Government of India with a view to developing 100 cities all over the country and making these both citizen-friendly and sustainable.
