ACP Honours Former President of Its Parliamentary Assembly

By ACP Press

BRUSSELS (IDN) – On behalf of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States and the Secretariat, Secretary General Dr. Patrick I. Gomes conveyed his deepest condolences to the family and friends, the Government and People of the Republic of Kenya, particularly the people of Bomet County following the death of their Governor, Dr. Joyce Laboso, on July 29, 2019.

He said, Dr. Laboso will be remembered by the 79-member ACP Group of States for the leadership role she played as President of the ACP Parliamentary Assembly and Co-President of the Joint ACP and European Union (EU) Parliamentary Assembly for the period 2012-2013, having previously led Kenya’s delegation to these assemblies on several occasions.

In that capacity, said Dr. Gomes, Dr. Laboso worked assiduously and steered the work of ACP and EU Parliamentarians in promoting democratic processes through dialogue.

During her tenure, the work of ACP and ACP-EU Parliamentary Assemblies raised public awareness of socioeconomic and development issues, facilitated greater understanding between the peoples of the ACP and the EU and as a result enhanced the ACP-EU Partnership, he added.

Dr. Gomes recalled working with Dr. Laboso and said: “A warm and friendly person who endeared herself to all who worked closely with her. Her unwavering commitment to the objectives and values of the ACP Group was unquestionable. It was an honour to have known and worked with her, and her passing will be deeply felt.” [IDN-InDepthNews – 31 July 2019]
