NEW YORK (IDN) – Pope Francis – born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires in 1936 – has been noted in his home country “for his humility, his emphasis on God’s mercy, his concern for the poor, and his commitment to interfaith dialogue”. But in his wide-ranging address at the United Nations General Assembly on September 25, the Argentine pontiff has proved himself the sole world leader, unfettered by parochial interests of any sort whatsoever.
UNITED NATIONS (IDN | UN News Centre) – The buzz and excitement about global development are intensifying at the United Nations, as world leaders begin arriving in New York to launch a landmark new framework that will aim to end poverty and build a life of dignity for all, leaving no one behind.
WASHINGON (IDN) – The Global Financial Integrity (GFI), a non-profit, research and advisory organization, has highlighted ten stark facts about Sustainable Development Goals and illicit financial flows out of developing countries.
It pointed out in a media release that the scourge that illicit financial flows (IFFs) inflict upon poverty alleviation efforts has become well known and is addressed in the Sustainable Development Goals agenda (target 16.4).
In reaction to the new global commitments, Global Financial Integrity (GFI) President Raymond Baker said “we applaud this important step to curtail the torrent of money streaming out of developing economies.”

ROME (IDN) – A senior UN official has stressed close links between conflict, imperilled rural livelihoods and migration, pointing out that “rural development and food security are central to the global response to the refugee crisis”.
FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva said in a web posted statement on September 24: “The millions of people who are being forced to flee from war, poverty and other hardships are a tragic reminder of the urgent need for peaceful solutions based on social justice and improved economic opportunities for all. Key to achieving this is the protection of and investment in rural livelihoods.”

NEW YORK (IDN) – This morning at the White House, I saw Pope Francis urge world leaders to protect the most vulnerable and build an economy that leaves no one behind.
As I watched Pope Francis, I was jubilant. After all, the organization I direct, Jubilee USA, was founded by religious leaders and Pope John Paul II to do just that – win global economic reforms to benefit those living in poverty.

Als nützlich erweisen sich dabei die vielen Erfahrungen, die Israel mit seinen Hilfs- und Nothilfemaßnahmen in armen Ländern machen konnte.
Bereits Israels Gründungsvater David Ben Gurion hatte die Vision, mit der Weitergabe von Wissen und Ressourcen weltweit Gutes zu tun. Und die einstige Ministerpräsidentin Golda Meir erklärte später, dass kein anderes israelisches Projekt sie so sehr mit Stolz erfüllt habe wie “unser internationales Kooperationsprogramm”.
